Our Approach To Reading At SRPA

In 2001, Dr. Hollis Scarborough created the Reading Rope using pipe cleaners to convey how the different ‘strands’ of reading are all interconnected yet independent of one another. For many students, learning to read is a challenge. Scarborough’s Rope captures the complexity of learning to read. In order for students to become fluent readers, they need all the strands of their reading ‘rope’ to work effectively. Weakness in one strand of reading causes the rope to fray, causing a loss of essential strength in word recognition or language comprehension. At SRPA, when we find that a student has a weakness in one of the areas of reading, we refer to the Reading House (above, right) to find ways to address that weakness. All departments at SRPA use a range of strategies to enable all students to access reading material in their lessons and these strategies are based around the different areas of reading represented by the Reading House.

In addition to the many strategies listed in the different ‘rooms’ of the Reading House, we also use the programs below to ensure all student readers, including those who find reading difficult, can become confident readers, able to access their lessons across the curriculum and develop a love of reading for pleasure.

SRPA Library

The library is a hub within the Academy that is bustling with students seeking to borrow books of all varieties, particularly when preparing for Drop Everything and Read sessions. It is also a fantastic place for students to share recommendations with their peers and discuss what they are reading too.

If there is a book you wish to borrow but it is not currently part of our catalogue, please visit the library at either break or before school and complete a ‘book wish list’ form and, where possible, Mrs White will try to source a copy to add to our catalogue.

How to access the Library Catalogue:

To check whether the library stocks a book that you would like to borrow, follow this link: Sir Robert Pattinson Academy (accessit.online)

You can sign in using your SRPA email address and usual computer password here by clicking on the ‘guest’ tab and choosing ‘Login via SSO’:

This will allow you to browse books available in the library, look at your loan history and current loans and reserve any titles you wish to borrow too.

You can search for books via the search bar on the left using the title, author, genre or key word that might be linked to the book
